Title

DEVELOPMENT OF ADSORBENT MATERIAL AND STUDY OF REMOVAL OF FLUORIDE FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION USING AZADIRACHTA INDICA BARK

Abstract

A new bioadsorbent material was developed by impregnation of carbonized Azadirachta indica bark in H2SO4 and NaOH followed by microwave treatment (MACAIB). Developed bioadsorbent was characterized using proximate and ultimate analysis. The element analysis of prepared bioadsorbent of Azadirachta indica bark shows 58.54 % carbon, 1.48 % hydrogen and 1.39 % nitrogen. The surface morphology and the chemical composition of MACAIB were analyzed by SEM and EDX, respectively. EDX results of MACAIB material have 51.10% of carbon by weight. The surface chemical nature of bioadsorbent and functional groups on the surface of the active carbon was studied by FT-IR and XRD. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area under nitrogen adsorption at -1960C of prepared adsorbent was found 65.82 m2/g. Batch adsorption experiments were performed for removal of fluoride. The maximum percent removal efficiency of fluoride with an initial fluoride concentration 2 mg/L was found to be 83.50%. Thermodynamic analysis proposes that removal of fluoride from aqueous solution by MACAIB material was an exothermic and spontaneous process. Experimental adsorption isotherm equilibrium data furnish the best fit with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and the adsorption kinetics experiments followed pseudo second-order kinetic model. The present study showed that chemically impregnated Azadirachta indica bark is an effective adsorbent for removal of fluoride.
