Plan Colombia was a foreign and military aid package sent by the United States to Colombia. The plan was discussed in 1999 and came into effect in 2000 and phased out by 2015. The one-and-a-half-decade aid that the United States sent to Colombia, has not been able to create a long-term, desired impact of reducing coca production and fighting against guerilla forces. The Plan has not been able to produce any significant, tangible benefit for Colombians. On the contrary, it has hurt many Colombians, especially those living in rural areas, usually as farmers. This research paper will delve into the social, ecological, and economic impacts of Plan Colombia, on a micro and macro level. While it is difficult to obtain accurate details about the drug trade because a majority of it happens in extreme secrecy, this paper will try to acquire information from verified, credible sources.
