Title

Ogilvie's Syndrome After Caesarean Section

Authors

Abstract

Acute colonic pseudo-obstruction (ACPO), commonly known as Ogilvie's syndrome, is an uncommon but serious complication that can arise following a caesarean section. ACPO can normally be treated conservatively or with neostigmine if detected early; even in situations with considerable caecal dilatation without signs of perforation, colonoscopy-guided decompression can be effective. Severe abdominal distension, discomfort, or symptoms of perforation or sepsis indicate the need for a laparotomy. Although the prevalence of laparotomy following caesarean section is significant, overall mortality is low; early detection and treatment are critical for a positive outcome.
