Title

Digital Library Initiatives in India and its Usefulness in Educators

Abstract

A 'Digital Library' is a type of library that specialises in the acquisition, storage, and retrieval of digital objects. The digital collection may be in various formats, such as text, audio-video material, photographs, and so on. The Government of India has recently launched many projects to digitise resources. This research is a survey of digital library projects in India, gathered from the websites of approximately fifty digital libraries. The data demonstrate that in most situations, the concept of a digital library is still in its infancy. A digital library also includes online subscriptions and links to third-party websites. However, many digital libraries do not have a functional search interface on their separate websites due to insufficient metadata organisation. In certain circumstances, they may not have their own digitised collection and must rely on the collections of others or refer their readers to a third-party website. Furthermore, many digital libraries are inaccessible from outside the organisation (remote access). As a result, regular website maintenance, remote access, and suitable information professional training are essential. Furthermore, India's so-called digital libraries have neither set their own standards or adhere to any worldwide norms. However, the usage numbers for government digital libraries are significantly superior to those of academic or public libraries. Users may be more interested in the government's regulations, laws, and orders. That could be a good indicator for digital governance and reaching out to the people. There are some noteworthy observations and policy recommendations that may be useful to students, scholars, library workers, and government decision makers.
