Title

NEP 2020's Contribution to Generating Employment Opportunity Through Student's Skill Development

Abstract

The introduction of the New Education Policy 2020 heralds a radical shift in the present education system, turning attention away from learning-based education towards skill-based education. Students' interest in a variety of skills will be sparked by the introduction of vocational education (skill-based education) beginning in sixth grade. This paper concentrates on skill-based education, which is addressed in the NEP, and what impact it will have on employment level if it is offered at the early ages in middle and secondary school. This paper aims to figure out the ratio of employment and unemployment of young individuals after obtaining a higher degree from the existing educational system. The study is descriptive and data collecting is done using a secondary method. The National Skills Qualifications Framework addresses the problem that many students from the vocational education system did not have clear pathways to higher education, which results in a complete absence of vertical mobility for those individuals. Vocational education is perceived as inferior to mainstream education and this influences students' decision-making. With the growth of "academic" or other abilities, vocational skills will also emerge. Mobility between "general" and vocational education will be facilitated by the credit-based Framework. Also, the potential for providing vocational training using ODL mode will be explored. The International Labour Organization's International Standard Classification of Occupations will be the benchmark against which Indian norms would be measured. This paper concludes that skill-based development will be essential to the nation's development and serve as a link between knowledge and its practical application so that every student will complete their education with a working knowledge of at least one skill thus unemployment will be decreased as a result of skill development.
