Title

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING ON STRESS AND BURNOUT AMONG NURSING STUDENTS – A QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL STUDY

Abstract

ABSTRACT As the world changes every single day, especially in regard to the environment, social functions, and cultural aspects, individuals are exposed to newer and changing trends. These changes could impact the stress level and stimulate their adaptation. The nature of nursing education can cause nursing students stress in all aspects including clinical area, classroom, and relationship with others. Stress is likely to contribute to burnout and attrition in nursing students. Therefore, conduct a study to spell out the effectiveness of guidance and counseling among them to improve the quality of life to provide a quality service to society. The method used is one group pre-test post-test design with a quasi-experimental approach. The data was collected using the NAPS Student Nurse Stress Index and the Headington Institute burnout scale. The self-structured Intervention Package of Guidance and Counseling (IPGC) were implemented among 82 first-year GNM students from 3 nursing schools in Assam. A purposive sampling technique was used. The Pre-test assessment revealed (74.4%) had a moderate level of stress (score: 56-83), whereas in the post-test majority (63.4%) had only a mild level of stress (score: 29-55). The difference between the pre-test and post-test stress scores was significant (t= 8.224, P < 0.05). The pre-test burnout level score (67.1%) and in post-test reduced to 7.3%. The‘t’ value (t = 5.707) was greater than the table value (t60 = 1.671) at a 0.01 level of significance. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between stress and burnout and a significant association between family income and religion with the level of stress and burnout. The study showed a significant reduction in stress and burnout among nursing students after guidance and counseling.
