Title

DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF A PORTABLE PALM KERNEL EXTRACTOR

Abstract

ABSTRACT Palm kernel oil is an important component of African cuisine and rural industry. The traditional method of oil extraction currently utilized in rural areas is arduous, time consuming and inefficient. To mechanize the oil extraction process, a screw press implement for the multi-function platform diesel engine was designed. This device will be capable for processing in excess of 1 00 kg/hr of palm kernels, and expel kernel cake with no greater that 15% oil content. For third-world use, consideration of operator safety, hygiene and local maintenance were incorporated into the- design process. A prototype model, powered by an exercise bike, was built and tested. Test result showed that sufficient pressure was generated for oil expression. However, the model as built did not succeed in separating oil and cake. Proposed design modification includes reducing the width of the slit perforations in the press chamber, and the addition of an external heat source to reduce the viscosity of the expressed oil. In this plan design for mechanical extraction of 200kilogramm of Nmanu aki (palm kernel oil) per day. Several researches on palm kernel and palm kernel oil were carried out to know more about the oil extraction and how to design an effective, efficient machinery that will extract 200kg of oil per day. This was carried out by weighting 20g of palm kernel and grinding them smoothly on a mortal to palm kernel cake and using a neat cloth to squeeze the cake to determine or extract the oil. With the design of this machine using the screw type a mass of about 60kg of palm kernel will be fed into the milling chamber through a hopper.
