Title

CAUSES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND ASSESSING THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS OF WOMEN IN ASSAM

Abstract

Abstract : Violence against women has become an escalating global issue, transcending racial, ethnic, class, and national boundaries. It presents itself as a perilous threat to individual women and a grave societal concern. Customary practices in numerous countries infringe upon women's human rights, impacting millions across diverse socio-economic and educational strata. This pervasive issue spans cultural and religious divides, impeding women's full participation in society. Manifesting in various forms, from domestic abuse and rape to early marriages and practices such as female circumcision, these acts deny women their most fundamental human rights. Crime against women is not a recent phenomenon in Assam, as evidenced by available records of social organization and family structures. These historical documents reveal a pattern of women enduring ill-treatment, humiliation, torture, and exploitation. Instances of rape, abduction, and the brutal murder of women recur throughout Assamese society. Unfortunately, literature on social issues and criminal violence has often overlooked female victims, raising the question of why both the general public and academia have neglected the harsh reality of continuous and ruthless exploitation of women in our society. The primary aim of this paper is to investigate the causes behind domestic violence against women in Assam and to assess the socio-economic status of women in the region. By delving into historical perspectives and existing social structures, we seek to comprehend the roots of violence against women and shed light on the factors contributing to the persistent ignorance surrounding this critical issue. Understanding the underlying causes of domestic violence against women is crucial for devising effective interventions. By examining the socio-economic status of women in Assam, this paper aspires to contribute to the broader discourse on violence against women, urging society and academia to confront and address this longstanding and deeply entrenched issue. Only through a comprehensive understanding and collective efforts can we hope to eradicate the systemic violence that has persisted for far too long in Assam and beyond
