Title

Prevalence of writer’s cramp in students and its influence on distal upper extremity performance.

Abstract

Background: During the period of Covid-19 pandemic the students as well as institutions supported online learning & blended form of learning. After the Covid-19 pandemic switching back to traditional methods of learning might have been difficult for the students to cope. The study curriculum of Physiotherapy in India, still involves assessment of learning outcome in the form of writing assignments. Post the COVID pandemic it is difficult for students to join extensive writing work which can lead to pathological conditions like writer’s cramp. Hence the study aims to assess the prevalence of Writer’s cramp in Physiotherapy students and its influence on distal upper extremity performance. Settings and Design: Cross-sectional survey study Methods and Material: 151 Undergraduate Physiotherapy students participated through purposive sampling. A self-made & validated questionnaire including diagnostic criterion of Writer’s cramp was administered. Distal upper extremity performance in both the prevalent (Group A) and control (Group B) was assessed pre and post examination in the form of pinch strength. Results: Prevalence of writer’s cramp in the study population was found to be 34%. Although there was reduction of pinch strength seen in both the groups post examination but when compared with Group B, the ‘Group A’ showed significant (p-0.0001) reduction of pinch strength. Conclusions: The study concludes that Writer’s cramp is prevalent in Physiotherapy students and its development is affecting immediate distal upper extremity performance
