Title

A way forward towards electronics economy in India: Semiconductors

Authors

Abstract

India has a bright future in electronics manufacturing, with a growing domestic market, government support, and a skilled labor force. The country’s policies and initiatives aim to create a favorable business environment for electronics manufacturing in India, with financial incentives, streamlined regulations, and infrastructure support. With the ongoing shift in global supply chains, India is well-positioned to become a manufacturing hub for electronic products. India’s organic growth in the consumption of electronics, coupled with the Government’s target of achieving USD 300 billion worth of domestic electronics manufacturing by 2025– 26, creates a unique opportunity for global firms to look at India as the manufacturing hub for the Silicon Age. India's electronics sector is set to harness $7 billion untapped revenue by 2035 via circular business model and policy pathways. Current commitments and targets set the projected market size for these circular models at $13 billion in 2035. Semiconductor chips are the lifeblood of the modern information age. They enable electronic products to compute and control actions that simplify our lives. The manufacturing cycle of a semiconductor chip from sand to a finished product, sees it change hands approximately 70 times across international borders. Semiconductor chips are the drivers for ICT development and one of the key reasons for the current flattening of the world. This paper studies the current status of the Indian Electronic Industry particularly semiconductor chips concerning its production, employment, export, export potential, and the initiatives taken by the government. To capture the big share of the market domestically as well as globally by becoming a giant in the manufacturing of electronic products, to make India “Aatma Nirbhar” which derive export led growth, the Indian government has taken various initiatives, which have also been discussed in this paper.
