Title

WHY IS CHILD MARRIAGE STILL PREVALENT IN INDIA

Authors

Abstract

Child marriage is a prevalent issue in Indian society, where legal statutes often clash with cultural practices, especially regarding the minimum age for marriage. This paper delves into the multifaceted repercussions of child marriage on the empowerment of girls, drawing insights from Indian family law, scholarly research, and UNICEF reports. It discusses how early marriage disrupts girls' educational pursuits, constrains their economic prospects, and perpetuates gender inequalities in labour force engagement. Building upon the analysis of Klasen & Pieters, the paper explores how early marriage reinforces traditional gender norms, undermines female autonomy, and sustains cycles of poverty. Additionally, it examines the pivotal role of education in empowering girls and fostering social networks, as emphasized by UNICEF, and the subsequent disruption caused by child marriage. The paper concludes by advocating for legal reforms, holistic interventions, and community-driven approaches to combat child marriage and advance female empowerment within Indian society and globally.
