This work aims in retrieving the similar images from the database based on automatically derived features of the image such as colour, texture and shape. Our findings are based on the research and literature and also on the discussions with the researchers in that particular relevant field. The need of finding desired similar images to an image is shared by many professional fields, such as design engineers, art historians and journalists. This System can also be used as an image search engine. As the requirements of image users can be varied according to them, the useful characterization of an image queries is divided into three levels of abstraction. The first level is of primitive features such as colour and shape. The second level is of logical features such as identity of objects and the last level is of abstract attributes such as the significance of the scenes that are in the query image.
